Turned for the Kitchen
April 11-15 2011
In this week long workshop students of any skill level will enjoy the rewards of making objects to be used in the kitchen. Jennifer Shirley and Clay Foster will take you step by step through the processes of making a variety of functional objects that may include a pepper mill, wine and oil bottle stoppers, bottle openers, a lazy Susan, a barbecue meat flipper, scoops, a pizza cutter, a rolling pin and a cheese board and turned wooden knife. If you love to work at the lathe or have wanted to try woodturning, this class will keep you busy all week and then long after you arrive back home in your kitchen. Clay and Jennifer, who love to spend as much time in the kitchen as they do in their studio, will share homemade snacks with the class throughout the week and encourage every student to bring along a few favorite recipes to share with the class that will be assemble onto a CD along with photographs from the week for everyone to take home.

Turn Me A Story
September 4-9 2011
This class is structured for all skill levels and will focus on the opportunity to be narrative and tell stories with the things that we make. Jennifer Shirley and Clay Foster will have plenty of one on one time with students to focus on tool skills and techniques, wood selection and safety as well as urging students to think creatively. Stories are what connect all of us together and the lathe is the perfect vehicle for objects that can be the canvas for our stories. A variety of tools and materials will be used to decorate and enhance our turned objects this week. Whether you make bowls, hollow vessels, sculptural turnings or are just starting this unique class will get you thinking differently about the things that you make and send you home inspired and ready to make lots of turned stories.

Platters and Lidded Bowls with a Decorative Flair!
September 26-30 2011
In this class Jennifer will teach you how simple it is to make turned platters and lidded bowls. These functional objects can be used for years and handed down to the next generation to be cherished. Students from beginning to advanced levels will benefit from the skills and techniques that will taught throughout the week. Tool selection, sharpening and safety will be emphasized throughout the class. Using the bowl gouge in a variety of ways will open up new options for those already comfortable with it and get beginners off to a great start. In addition to making lots of bowls and platters this week we’ll look at a variety of ways to decorate and embellish our work to give it a personal and creative flair. No prior experience with the wood burner, carving tools or the use of color or dyes is necessary. All of the techniques used for decorating are simple but give dramatic results. Push your turned work to the next level with this fun and creative class!

The Art of Containment
October 3-7 2011
This week Jennifer Shirley and Clay Foster will encourage individual creativity in the making of several different containers. Lidded boxes, two piece hollow forms and lidded bowls will be the focus on the lathe. Off the lathe students will learn about exploring the never ending world of embellishing the surface of wood with texture, carving, filling texture with a variety of materials, coloring with milk paint, acrylics and adding elements such as wire, beads, shells and stone to our work. This week will be an exercise in putting your thumbprint on your work to make it truly your own.

Woodturning Fundamentals: spindles, bowls and more
July 27-31 2009
Anderson Ranch, set in the beautiful Rocky Mountains of Snowmass, Colorado, will be the backdrop for this class that is geared for both the beginner and the intermediate woodturner. We’ll explore the basic skills needed to become a well rounded turner. Spindles, bowls and small platters will be the focus of the week. Using our individual creativity to make them unique objects with our own personal flair is what will make this class special. Getting Started in Woodturning
August 29-30 2009
This class will be co taught by myself and Betty Scarpino. This will be an introductory workshop to jump start your woodturning. Betty and I will teach the basics of woodturning. We’ll introduce some simple techniques and methods that you can take home and easily duplicate in your own shop and be on your way to the wonderful world of woodturning. Seeing the Small side of Woodturning

I will be teaching a weekend workshop September 26-27th at Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin Indiana. Located just 20 minutes south of Indianapolis. This two day hands on class will explore the exciting world of small scale woodturning. Working in small scale offers the opportunity to draw the viewer in for an intimate look at the objects you make. It is a wonderful way to explore shape and form without investing too much time on each piece.
